A case came to her that had already been through three people and was, by any honest reading, going to take longer than anyone wanted. She did not hand it on. She did not build a case for why it was not hers. She started at the beginning, with the paperwork nobody had actually read, and worked forward.

It took eleven days. It could have taken six weeks or it could have quietly stopped moving altogether, which is what usually happens to cases with that many fingerprints on them.

What I keep thinking about is that nobody would have known. There was no version of this where the ball being dropped came back to her. She just did not want it dropped.
